Why is Higher Education SO Expensive?

January 23, 2019
The minimum for a job used to be a high school education. Today, the expectations of a job seeker likely start with a bachelors degree and might require additional advanced degrees and certifications. Additionally, the pressure, the prep, and the planning to even be admitted to college and university can be a job in of itself. Upon being accepted, it becomes a puzzle of financial analysis to understand how tuition, room and board, books, and living expenses will all be covered by a combination of savings, loans, federal aid, part-time jobs, and scholarships.
When did this all change?
Will costs only continue to inflate?
How do I think about saving for the children I have or might have in the future?
Are there alternatives to this path?
Join Civic Series and the Young Education Professionals of Boston to answer these questions and yours during our panel. This event will include an initial 15-minute presentation by Jeremy Thompson, followed by a 30-minute panel discussion moderated by YEP Board Member, Jennifer Ash. We request panel participants prepare a brief introduction where they can discuss how their work/organization seeks to raise awareness about the rising costs of higher education, as well as any potential alternatives or solutions to this growing problem. Following the event, there will be an opportunity for networking with attendees.
Speakers:
Jeremy Thompson, Senior Policy Analyst at MassBudget
Eliza Spang, Executive Director at Level
Fabrice Clerphon, Internship Services Manager at Year Up
