Is the Machine Dead? The Future of Chicago Politics
In 2019, Chicagoans were given many choices for their next mayor. That contest resulted in the landslide election of one of the most unlikely mayors the city has ever seen. Lori Lightfoot was distinguished among her fellow candidates not just because of the historic nature of her candidacy as a black, openly gay woman, but because she was seen as well outside the control and favor of Chicago’s infamous “machine” politics. One month after the historic inauguration of this new mayor, we ask: is Chicago’s storied political machine dead?
Join us as UIC professor, author, filmmaker, former Chicago alderman, and veteran political operator, Dick Simpson unpacks the history of the city’s machine politics, analyzes our current state of political affairs, and leads a discussion about the future of Chicago politics as the makeup and identity of the city continue to evolve.
Following Professor Simpson’s talk, he will lead a Q&A/discussion forum with attendees. The evening will close with a reception where attendees are encouraged to keep the conversation going over local beer, wine, soft drinks, and snacks.
