Understanding the Healthcare Debate
Understand the fundamental disagreements that drive the U.S. healthcare debate & get your questions answered by our guest expert.
When it comes to discussing healthcare policy in the United States, things heat up real fast. It can seem that the left and the right have almost completely different views on how the U.S. should structure our healthcare system: many Democrats praise the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare) and are seeking to expand it, while many Republicans call it unconstitutional and are working to repeal it.
This tension comes from different views on the role of government, on how to weigh the interests of different people, and on how different policies would affect the healthcare system. But what are these different views? And how do they affect how the U.S. healthcare system is structured?
In this introductory-level virtual Civic Series event, we’ll help you understand the fundamental disagreements that drive the healthcare debate in the U.S.
We’ll explore questions like:
- What does our healthcare system look like today?
- How do the parties differ in their definition of a “good” healthcare system?
- What are the biggest areas of debate?
- Why is healthcare so expensive and where is the money going?
- How do the policies of different politicians compare? (ACA vs. Senator Bernie Sanders’ “Medicare for All” vs. various Republican proposals to repeal and replace the ACA)
…and many more.
Join our jargon-free, virtual introduction and Q&A with guest expert Dr. Matthew Fiedler, fellow with the USC-Brookings Schaeffer Initiative for Health Policy. Together, we’ll unpack how to understand the debate and learn how the policies can affect our access and options for care.
